General Meeting

An Introduction to CORBA

Paul Jonusaitis

Tuesday, September 28, 1999 7:00-9:00 pm
College of DuPage Room SRC 2800(d,e,f)

The Common Object Request Broker Architecture (CORBA) and the Internet Inter-ORB Protocol (IIOP) have emerged as the open standards based distributed computing model and protocol. The integration of CORBA and IIOP into the Java 2 platform and the Enterprise JavaBeans specification reinforce their importance for the application architectures of the future.

This presentation will give the audience a knowledge of the fundamentals of CORBA and distributed computing architectures implemented in CORBA.

Topics will include:

  • Origins of CORBA
  • Basic elements: object request brokers, stubs, skeletons, IIOP and IDL
  • Commonly used CORBA services: naming, events, notification, transaction
  • How CORBA functions as infrastructure in intranets and Internet applications
  • Code examples in Java and C++
  • Overview of commercial and non-commercial CORBA implementations

    Speaker Bio

Paul Jonusaitis was a Senior Systems Engineer with Inprise Corporation (formerly Borland and Visigenic Software). His responsibilities included managing technical support relationships with customers in the Chicago area, developing implementation plans and architectural reviews.

Paul's career in software started in the early 1980s with COBOL development for financial analysis applications. He has been working with distributed object technology since the early 1990s, when the words 'distributed' and 'object' were both poorly understood. When not immersed in software, Paul works on weed hunting, dog wrangling and cat herding.
