Concurrent Versions System

Michael H. Buselli
Abbott Laboratories

Tuesday July 23rd 2002 at 7:00pm
College of DuPage, OCC 128(a,b)

Abstract

CVS, or the Concurrent Versions System, is a version control system used to keep old versions of files managed in directory trees. CVS is similar to SCCS and RCS, except that CVS is used to manage whole directory trees of files instead of just one file or a few files at a time.

In this presentation you will learn about basic CVS use and support. You will learn how to check out projects, manage changes to your files, how CVS handles concurrent edits for you, and basic CVS repository administration. There will also be information presented about the various methods available for CVS to access the repository.

Speaker Bio

Michael Buselli is a Senior Unix Systems Administrator with the Global Pharmaceuticals Research and Development Division at Abbott Laboratories in the city of North Chicago, Illinois. Michael is primarily responsible for several Unix services provided by his group including systems running BIND, Sendmail, Samba, Solaris Jumpstart, and Symantec Raptor. Michael enjoys programming in C, Korn shell, Perl, and Ruby.

Michael was first exposed to using CVS in early 1998 when his employer at that time, Spark Services, migrated to it from PVCS for managing all of the company's source code. Today Michael promotes use of CVS and RCS at Abbott for keeping track of old versions of important system configuration files.
