Emacs - The Ultimate Text Editor

Abstract

Any user familiar with UNIX has probably encountered and had to use the vi text editor. vi is ubiquitous, and has some powerful features. Linux has made vim editor the standard for that platform, but Emacs is still the "ultimate" editors.

For simple text editing or to modify UNIX configuration files, vi is a nice, quick light-weight text editor. However serious programmers and administrators use Emacs as their editor and environment of choice.

This talk will give a basic history and teach the basics of the Emacs text editor. We'll explore the reasons why programmers and power-users prefer Emacs as their editor of choice. Then we'll demonstrate many of the powerful capabilities of GNU Emacs.

Speaker Bio

David J. Young has over 19 years experience as a systems, network and database administrator. He is currently the MIS Director at National Cycle, a motorcycle accessories manufacturer. David has used GNU Emacs for more than 15 years, and still discovers powerful capabilities built-in to the editor all of the time. He has performed many Emacs demonstrations, and can usually convince anyone that Emacs is the "better ultimate editor".

Directions to IIT - Rice Campus in Wheaton
The 19-acre campus is located just northeast of the intersection of Naperville and Butterfield roads in south Wheaton's Danada development. The campus is three miles west of the Butterfield Road interchange of the North-South Tollway (I-355) and two miles north of the Naperville Road interchange of the East-West Tollway (I-88).

From the North or South: From I-355 (North-South Tollway), exit westbound at Rt.56/Butterfield Road and proceed west 3 1/2 miles on Butterfield Road to East Loop Road. Turn right onto East Loop Road (Grady's Restaurant and Phillip's 66 Gas Station on the corners); the campus will be on your right about a block north of Butterfield Road, behind Grady's and Cozymel's. Park in the Student parking lot behind the building. Room 103 is the first room inside the north enterance.

From the I-294 (Tri-State Tollway), take the I-88 (East-West Tollway) westbound and follow directions "From the East or West" below.

From the East or West: From I-88 (East-West Tollway), take the Naperville Road exit. At the traffic light, turn left onto Naperville Road and continue north for 1½ miles to Rt. 56/Butterfield Road. Turn right onto Rt. 56/Butterfield Road and proceed 1/4 mile to the first traffic light (East Loop Road). Turn left on to East Loop Road, (Grady's Restaurant and Phillip's 66 Gas station on the corners); the campus will be on your right about a block north of Butterfield Road, behind Grady's and Cozymel's. Park in the Student parking lot behind the building. Room 103 is the first room inside the north enterance.
