Abstract

A great deal has been happening in the world of embedded operating systems recently, and Linux is a significant player in this arena. Embedded operating systems are used in everything from set-top boxes, hand-held PDA's and industrial controllers to cell phones and the Hubble Space Telescope. To get a handle on what this all means, this talk will address such questions as:

What is an embedded operating system?

What is it used for? What makes for a good embedded OS?

Who are the big players in embedded OS's?

What's the difference between a real time operating system and an embedded operating system?

What is a real time operating system?

What is it about Linux that makes it a good choice to build an embedded operating system from?

What development and testing tools are available?

Where and why is embedded Linux currently being used?

What resources for further information are available?

Speaker Bio

Bill Latura is a Systems Development Manager with the Applied Services group at Ondeo Nalco in Naperville, IL. He spends his time designing and implementing process automation systems, and developing cost-effective methods of process data collection, including the use of 802.11b, infra-red and Bluetooth wireless. He is also the system administrator for a Linux box being used as a file and internal Web server running Apache and SAMBA. Bill has been working with PC's in one form or another since the early 80's. Currently his home network include four boxes running a combination of Linux and Windows 2000 connected via fast Ethernet.

Bill's first exposure to Linux was in the pre-1.0 kernel days of 1993. He's been a Red Hat fan since summer '95, though he has also worked with the SuSE, Slackware, Yggradrasil and Caldera distributions.

Bill has been the Treasurer of UniForum Chicago for the past six years.

The 19-acre campus is located just northeast of the intersection of Naperville and Butterfield roads in south Wheaton's Danada development. The campus is three miles west of the Butterfield Road interchange of the North-South Tollway (I-355) and two miles north of the Naperville Road interchange of the East-West Tollway (I-88).

From the North or South: From I-355 (North-South Tollway), exit westbound at Rt.56/Butterfield Road and proceed west 3 1/2 miles on Butterfield Road to East Loop Road. Turn right onto East Loop Road (Grady's Restaurant and Phillip's 66 Gas Station on the corners); the campus will be on your right about a block north of Butterfield Road, behind Grady's and Cozymel's. Park in the Student parking lot behind the building. The Auditorium is in the east hallway of the building.

From the I-294 (Tri-State Tollway), take the I-88 (East-West Tollway) westbound and follow directions "From the East or West" below.

From the East or West: From I-88 (East-West Tollway), take the Naperville Road exit. At the traffic light, turn left onto Naperville Road and continue north for 1½ miles to Rt. 56/Butterfield Road. Turn right onto Rt. 56/Butterfield Road and proceed 1/4 mile to the first traffic light (East Loop Road). Turn left on to East Loop Road, (Grady's Restaurant and Phillip's 66 Gas station on the corners); the campus will be on your right about a block north of Butterfield Road, behind Grady's and Cozym el's. Park in the Student parking lot behind the building. The Auditorium is i n the east hallway of the building.
