Sudo - Secure and Convenient

TiddlyWiki

Michael Potter / David Young

Tuesday November 27th 2007 at 7:00pm
Wheaton, Illinois Institute of Technology - Rice Campus, Room 103

Abstract

This meeting will have two distinct presentations. The first part will be on the "sudo" administration tool by Mike Potter, and the second part will be on TiddlyWiki by David Young.

Sudo is a security tool that comes pre-installed on many *NIX systems, including Mac OS X, and most distributions of Linux. sudo allows for fine grained control of privileges as an alternative to setuid programs & scripts, turning on read & write privileges on sensitive files, sharing passwords, and (gasp) giving out the root password.

The sudo presentation will begin with a quick demo for those of you who are unfamiliar with sudo, continue with an overview of the syntax of the configuration file, and end with a series of problems and solutions that will help you configure sudo to be secure and convenient.

In the second half of the presentation, David Young will give us a close look at TiddlyWiki; "a reusable non-linear personal web notebook". Jeremy Ruston created TiddlyWiki, and in the process has created a new WritingStyle that exploits the use of MicroContent. With an active user community and powerful features, TiddlyWiki and it's adaptations are quickly becoming a popular WikiWikiWeb.

Come see the power of this "GuerillaWiki" by seeing some examples of TiddlyWiki pages. You just may become a convert.

Bios

Michael has been working IT industry since 1989 when he switched from automotive embedded systems. Since that time he has been involved in projects related to moving mainframe applications to UNIX and Linux using opensource technologies. Projects have included a CICS emulator written in C, a source code control and configuration system built on top of cvs, a DFSORT like set of utilities that work similar to sed/grep/sort tools on unix, and a JCL to bash conversion scheme. You can reach Mike at pottmi@gmail.com.

David J. Young has over 21 years experience as a programmer, systems, network and database administrator. He is currently the IT Director at National Cycle, a world leader in motorcycle windshield and accessories manufacturing. It is his ideal job. It combines computers and motorcycling; two of his life-long passions. When he's not on a computer, he's exploring an European or US twisty backroad on a sport bike, or aggressively slicing through the trees on his dirt bike.
