Abstract

PBX's as we know today are becoming "Jurassic" in their ability to keep up with the pace of technology and the demands of customers today. Over the past 5 years IP Telephony has been evolving into a fully featured PBX replacement, but more importantly, a completely ubiquitous, standards based, software solution.

Gone are the days of being "locked in" to a PBX manufacturer for every component, feature set, upgrade, etc. IP telephony allows customers to choose phones from a variety of different manufacturers and even different applications to work in conjunction with their Software based PBX. Even more compelling is the ability for customers to write their own applications to work with their phone systems and phones.

Cisco Systems, Inc. provides software based IP Telephony solutions for Enterprises and scaling to the Medium and Small business. The phones have a large pixel based display that is an XML parser. The display can be pointed to URL's to display any type of information, text or graphics. The PBX is almost infinitely scale able and flexible because it is software upgrade able and not reliant on hardware.
